What is Semaglutide or Tirzepatide and how does it work?

Semaglutide or Tirzepatide is a peptide used for weight loss (also known as Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro), a once-weekly injection, for chronic weight management when used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise.

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called “GLP-1.” Tirzepatide is a dual peptide of GLP-1 and GIP. Both GIP and  GLP-1 are hormones that our body naturally produces in response to the presence of food in the stomach. It works by slowing down stomach emptying and signaling to your brain that your stomach is full. This allows patients to experience less hunger and feel satisfied with fewer calories.

How many calories should I eat on our diet program?

It is recommended that your diet consists of 1200-1800 calories to be successful on Semaglutide or Tirzepatide. A 1200-1800 calorie diet can average anywhere from 5-8 pounds a month.

What to expect on your first diet appointment?

We will review your medical history and the medications you take. We will perform a consultation to determine if you are a proper candidate for this diet. If we determine you are a diet candidate, you can receive your first injection and start losing weight.

 

When do I come in for my next shot?

You will return once a week (same day preferred) to receive your injection. We will take your weight each visit and review any symptoms or questions you may have. We will gradually increase your dosage based on your feedback to maximize your weight loss. Measurements will be taken at the beginning of the diet and monthly thereafter to monitor your process.

 

Common side effects and what to report to your healthcare provider?

Patients occasionally suffer from common side effects such as: nausea, stomachache, diarrhea, constipation, and tiredness. These side effects should be reported at your once-a-week visit. Most side effects will resolve after the first few weeks on the medication but all symptoms need to be reported to the staff.
